XM Weather Problems - Airline Pilot Central Forums (5)XM Weather Problems

Hello all,

I was flying home yesterday on my scheduled 135 route, when my Garmin Aera 560 with GXM 40 antenna lost its xm weather reception about 25 minutes after takeoff. It's worked for months picking up weather just fine. It worked that day as well, and then, POOF! it won't pick up weather anymore.

I went to Garmin's website to update the software because I read that may be a culprit. It still does not pick up weather. XM Weather Problems - Airline Pilot Central Forums (6) Any suggestions?

Isn't XM an addon subscription? Could someone have screwed up and only registered for a 3 month trial? Or did the subscription lapse?

I have that happen every now and then for no good apparent reason. It isn't 100% reliable. That's why you still have to have radar in 135.

I have experienced the problem in a Cessna 310, a 152, and on the ground. No weather since Friday afternoon.

As far as the subscription goes, I am going to make some phone calls Monday to see if the problem is on XM's end. Hopefully so. I want this fixed!

As far as on board radar goes, I agree, but tell that to my boss-man. I don't know he has the funds or desire to do that.

We've experienced that on our ADR EFB's. Had to re-enter the
Subscription code.

Another issue is on the 396's at least - there is an onboard battery which saves satellite info/location info that wears out. Once that's out it takes half an hour to reposition itself.

Had a similar issue in our Cirrus before we upgraded to R9 and WSI weather.

Never had a problem with the 496 in our old Citation, and only had one problem with XM in our CJ2+ (but a CB reset fixed it).

496 I used to use in a 182 would lose signal around taller storms as well.

Well I called Sirius this morning. They tried four signal restarts. Nothing. They suggested I call Garmin. The Garmin person thinks the problem is the antenna. So I mailed that into Garmin today. They expect 7-10 days to get the antenna back to me once they get it. Anyways, a bit frustrating when I'm flying now. I guess I got pampered having all the information on board. However, with convective activity picking up, having that stuff gets to be more than a luxury, but a safety tool in my opinion.

Anywas, I called Sirius again and asked if I could put my wx subscription on a hiatus until my antenna gets back. They were super cool about it, no questions asked. So kudos to Sirius.

I will keep you all posted.
