JCPS parents give mixed reviews of pick-up and drop-off at magnet, traditional schools (2024)

JCPS parents gave mixed reviews of how pick-up and drop-off went for magnet and traditional schools. The JCPS Board voted to cut busing to most of these schools earlier this year. We spoke to people as they picked up students outside of duPont Manual High School. "Very long lines," said Jean Windham. "It was easy, it was smooth, it was uneventful for the most part," said Savannah Farrell. Parents say traffic guards helped keep things running. However, it was a frustration for other parents. Desira Mills is a mom to two students who go to two separate magnet schools with the same start time. "A lot of these schools that you took busing away from are on busy streets. So it was bad enough; they were already congested," she said. Mills says her youngest daughter goes to Brandeis Elementary, where the drop-off went smoothly. But it was a different story when she dropped her older daughter off at Western Middle School for the Arts. "Western Middle is on 22nd Street, that's a busy one-way street," she said. "So I come up Rowan Street, and there's a line, like a line long as ever.So I circled the block. I couldn't find the start of the line. I circled the block again and come to find out the start of the line was on Market. So I'm like, this is crazy. Like, this is crazy."School started at 8:40 a.m., and she said she was still in line just minutes before."So I told my daughter, I said well, what am I have to do. I'm going to have to let you out across the light on Market and 22nd, the same side as the school, just at the end of the school building. And so once I pass the light, I let her out. Mind you, there were still cars there in the line."District spokesperson Carolyn Callahan says all schools are already reviewing how drop-off and pick-up went and will make adjustments as necessary. "While we have heard some reports of longer lines at duPont Manual and Male, we have also heard great things about smooth drop-offs at schools like Barret and JCTMS," she said.
