The competitive tenderto market for a new Sydney Airport Slot Manager was released earlier this week. This is part of the Australian Government's overarching reforms to the slot management mechanism at the airport. Congratulations to LBG!Passenger traffic at three of the four airports serving Los Angeles County continued to soar in March, with Long Beach Airport hitting an all-time record high for passengers during the month. Meanwhile, at Los Angeles International Airport, growth in domestic passengers has all but vanished, slowing the recovery to pre-pandemic levels. Collectively, Ontario International, Hollywood-Burbank and Long Beach airports saw 1.42 million passengers in March, up exactly 20% from March of 2019. Both March and the first quarter saw continued drops in cargo tonnage figures at LAX and Ontario airports, which together handle more than 98% of the air cargo from all four of the airports serving the county. London City Airport (LCY) has won its appeal to national government after its original planning application was refused by local government in the form of the London Borough of Newham. LCY now has the ability to expand pax numbers up to 9M per year, from the current cap of 6.5M. This is a significant win for LCY & for its new CEO Alison FitzGerald and her team. LCY did not get everything it wanted as the weekend closure from 12.30 Saturday to 12.30 Sunday remains in place but they have been allowed extra movements Mon-Fri in the first hour. The weekend closure has always been a challenge for LCY airlines as in effect they can use their aircraft at LCY for 6 days/week but the aircraft have 7 days/week costs. This is why BA Cityflyer operate leisure flights from other airports at weekends. However, the history of the weekend closure needs to be kept in mind. During my early years at LCY, under it's then CEO, the late Richard Gooding, we were able to trade the weekend closure against an increase in movements from 17,500 a year to 33,000. Subsequent movement increases were based on the 33,000 annual movement limit, so LCY has been able to substantially develop the airport on the back of this trade. These historical milestones sometimes get forgotten in the cut and thrust of politics and planning. This should be a day of celebration for UK airports as the new Labour government has pushed through a business focused policy that will help UK PLC to grow and develop in a sustainable way and that has to be good news for the economy, for jobs, for growth, for productivity and for UK aviation#aviation #airports #airlines #airportplanning https://lnkd.in/eBpc3huW

Happy to see that the DfT has finally released our 2019 report on slot allocation. While the aviation landscape may have shifted since we wrote our report, our insights and conclusions are probably still relevant.There's no easy answer for how slots ought to be allocated at very congested airports. The current system works well enough at airports where demand is just slightly more than the available slots, but it doesn't guarantee a good outcome for customers or for society where there is lots of congestion. And it is likely to break down when used to allocate a large number of new slots at a previously congested airport.Auctions are often touted as a solution, but they come with their own practical challenges and risks. Slots are currently allocated at 5-minute intervals, and airlines have complex sets of preferences around which slots are complements and which are substitutes. Running an auction at that level of detail may be too complex and may fail completely.The question is, are the potential benefits from auctions large enough to make taking those risks worthwhile?https://lnkd.in/dMP-jtXT
